You’re paying a monthly retainer to a marketing agency, but your phone isn’t ringing any more than usual. Are they actually doing anything effective?
It’s a valid question. Here’s how to tell if your agency is delivering results or just sending reports.
Signs Your Agency IS Delivering
- Increasing Leads & Calls: The most critical metric. Your lead volume (calls, form fills) should trend upwards over time. Incremental growth is still growth.
- Clear Lead Source Tracking: They can pinpoint which campaigns (Google Ads, SEO, Social) are generating the leads. They don’t just report “traffic” – they report “leads from X channel.”
- Account Ownership: You own your Google Ads, Google Analytics, and social media accounts. You can log in anytime to see raw data.
- Transparent Reporting: They explain what they did this month (specific actions taken) and tie it to results, not just present data.
- Consistent Communication: You have a dedicated point of contact who is responsive and knowledgeable about your account.
Red Flags That Indicate It’s NOT Working
- Vanity Metrics Focus: Reports are full of impressions, clicks, reach, and followers, with little to no mention of actual leads or revenue generated.
- Unreachable Point of Contact: You have to chase them for updates or answers, especially when something isn’t working.
- Constantly Changing Account Managers: Each new person assigned to your account needs time to get up to speed, leading to fragmented strategy and lost context.
- Lack of Account Access: They insist on managing everything in their own accounts and won’t grant you full access. This is a major red flag.
- Stagnant Results: After 3–6 months, there’s minimal to no improvement in lead generation or key business metrics.
- Guaranteed Rankings: Any agency promising #1 Google rankings outright is likely not playing by Google’s rules and could face penalties.
The One Question You MUST Ask
Ask your agency (or potential agency): “How many qualified leads did we generate last month, and which channel was most effective?”
If they can answer directly and confidently, that’s a good sign. If they pivot to talk about traffic, impressions, or “brand awareness” without a clear lead number, it’s time to re-evaluate.
Effective marketing should drive measurable business results. If yours isn’t, it’s time for a change.
